Please RT: happy to share that I'm starting my lab Human Genetics in Spring 2020. We're recruiting and please check out the lab website @ if you're interested in the union of single-cell technology, DNA repair and recombination. Details linked above.

Welcome to Seattle Jason! have to miss your GS talk but it’s great that I can hear it at the Hutch!! Looking forward to your talk

Yep but you’re talking about the mean, I’m talking about an outlier of potentially queuing 29 mo and the reason behind that from the school’s side in a specific case of deferred start date in faculty hire, since it’s a affiliated one and faculty has priority.

So much to do before starting a lab but had to spend so much time arguing with BH, mostly about when/whether I count as faculty. Now experiments first, will come back to add more about what I think is unfair and what needs to improve in this process. Any advice appreciated. 6/n

As a foreigner who’s restricted by visa status where adjunct or visiting faculty aren’t possible, made sure to call often and they always assure that yes you count as senate faculty until when it actually matters for your child to get enrolled. 5/n

chair tried to help by verifying my status, BH ignores. Our department made two hires and BH also gets to choose who to ignore who not to. Lets try dean’s office, advice by admin is change your start date? Yep your tenure clock is decided by daycare manager. 4/n

SoM pays BH to assure high priority for faculty as part of the recruitment effort but in fact no one cares how things are actually managed. All you get as answer is we don’t have power over daycare but in fact no one helps verify that you’re a senate faculty. 3/n

started queueing in BH 04/18, gave birth 11/18, got offer 03/19, added UCLA 04/19, priority date of 04/18 counts w/in BH, center said wow no one queues that early promise a spot for your son 03/20. 01/20: no, you don’t count as anything till March. Let’s start queuing from 0. 2/n

Deferred a year to start my lab partly to get daycare in place, was promised a daycare spot in Mar. by , the daycare changed director, senate faculty status lost by their mistake, now they say you don’t count as faculty until you start and wait till late Sep. 1/n

If enters human cells via the ACE2 receptor, and the ACE2 catalytic domain is extracellular, and some ACE2 inhibitors induce large conformational changes in ACE2 (e.g., see the attached image), could some ACE2 inhibitors impede viral entry? 1/2

The chalk talk; my own personal two cents... 1. The goal of a chalk talk is not to show how much you know, or to show all the ideas and projects you can think or or actually accomplish

how badly we can predict genetic outcomes just basing on evidence from in vitro or some oversimplified molecular assays. The best answer seems always to be “just try it out”! I think it’s nice to just be a very detailed dictionary about what’s been done.

If there’s a good kind of priests, they should be a table of relevant assays+results, rather than work/won’t work kind of opinion. Being the only DNA person in tech dev labs, particularly CRISPR related, it made me more aware how little we know about DNA repair, to be specific,

The Copenhaver Lab is hiring postdocs! We have two really cool newly funded projects that we’re filling positions for immediately. Please see: The overarching goal of the projects are to understand how recombination in is regulated. Please RT.

so interesting: SSD1 is what we refer to in Tom's lab as the "squishy pink" locus in the R/W sector assay for mitotic crossover. The colonies look squishy pink when they should be non-squishy red and we know whether the crossover is CEN-proximal or distal

First stop in 2020 for is with giant of erythropoiesis Jan Abkowitz, the incredible Thalia Papayannopoulou, and the best Mary Claire King (oh she also discovered BRCA1, nbd). It’s going to be a great day! If in Seattle come by tomorrow!

Hey Micro peeps:: Two grad students in my lab, Chantal Guegler and Peter Culviner, developed a super easy DIY kit for rRNA depletion for RNA-seq. Works like the RiboZero kit that inexplicably stopped selling - ours is as good and way cheaper!

The first research paper from my lab is up on bioRxiv! We combined signatures of gene expression alteration and allelic imbalance to discover meiotic and mitotic aneuploidy in published scRNA-seq data from human preimplantation embryos. 1/13
