I'm excited to share my latest article, "Prosecutorial Disassociation," which surveys prosecutors' associations around the country—and the challenges that progressive prosecutors face in deciding whether to stay in these associations or to leave. https://ajclonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Prosecutorial-Disassociation.pdf …pic.twitter.com/6qtpmOwLBl

Prosecutors' associations haven't received much scholarly or popular attention, but they have a massive role in shaping criminal justice policy. They've historically used this power to advance tough-on-crime policies. They also have a big role in training and educating new DAs.

So the dilemma for a progressive prosecutor isn't ideal—if they stay, they're endorsing policies with which they fundamentally disagree; if they leave, they're missing out on training and educational opportunities for the staff in their office. What should they do?

Into this void step some alternatives: Virginia Progressive Prosecutors for Justice, founded by @AmyAshworthVA, Anton Bell, @biberajbb, @parisa4justice, @SteveDescano, @HingeleyJim, @AttyStepMorales, Joseph Platania, Bryan Porter, @ShannonTaylorVA, and Gregory Underwood.

And in California, the Prosecutors Alliance of California (@ProsAlliance), which was founded by @GeorgeGascon, Tori Salazar (@sjcda_media), @DADianaBecton, and @chesaboudin. https://prosecutorsalliance.org/

At the national level, Fair and Just Prosecution (@fjp_org), led by the incomparable @miriamkrinsky, has done an amazing job of linking up prosecutors around the country on areas of concern. It's also published its set of 21 Principles to guide reformers.https://fairandjustprosecution.org/

My article explores all of these dimensions and more. I also want to mention @Taniel, whose reporting for @theappeal made this article possible. There are few people who are as committed to reporting on prosecutorial politics and elections as he is—and I'm beyond appreciative.

So with all of that said, "Prosecutorial Disassociation" was published recently with the American Journal of Criminal Law (@AmJCrimL) and is available for download on their website: https://ajclonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Prosecutorial-Disassociation.pdf ….
