Imagine looking around New York today and deciding more parking placards are a good idea.https://twitter.com/ydanis/status/1006252024470671361 …
Press Parking permits for our reporters to do a faster and better job for our City. What’s the issue with this?

Because they will almost certainly abuse them to let them park wherever they want to, even if they’re not reporting on an urgent story

They abuse the privilege frequently. That's the issue. As I've said, if the story warrants it - if there's truly breaking news - no crew would be above risking a ticket. Do you think they wouldn't cover a major story simply because they don't have a placard?

And I work in media and understand the need to lug heavy equipment around in a van.

I would say the same thing with the 50K placards given out to the teachers. They are abused. There is no enforcement.

Take a look at the bike lanes near city hall and 100 centre st and note the type of vehicles parked illegally.

Permits encourage driving and illegal parking. If parking availability is the concern, require DOT to meter all parking and run a program similar to SF to set meter prices that keep spaces available. Permits don't improve the problem of too many cars.

They already park illegally and all over sidewalks and bike paths.

"There's a terrorist attack! Should we cover it?" "Nah, nowhere to park and we don't have a placard."
