Before its closure in 1998, Hong Kong’s Kai Tak airport was known as one of the most difficult to fly into. The airport was located right in the city and planes required a 45 degree turn to line up w the runway, quite literally flying in between high rise buildings to land.

One time, I was at a Q&A with Nora Roberts, and someone asked her how to balance writing and kids, and she said that the key to juggling is to know that some of the balls you have in the air are made of plastic & some are made of glass.

Unsolicited talk advice: Your goal is to make the audience feel smart. Less data with a comprehensive story that people can follow makes a much bigger impact than a data dump where they leave saying “that was a lot of data, but I don’t get what it shows”

“Firefall” at Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park, California, looks like a scene from a fantasy movie. But, it is an ordinary waterfall, which is illuminated by the sunset, that gives it a fiery glow.

Why is there no deep learning tutorial that explains things in Normal People terms. I am not taking recommendations for tutorials at this time unless your tutorial is like, "And the rank of a tensor is how many sets of bracket thingies it has when you print it out."

300 applications for ML internship. Not a single one can write a scikit pipeline and normalise input data. Everyone has advanced ML and data science degrees from all kinds of cool programs. And everyone has worked on CNN. And everyone has published papers.

For saddle point problems and more general games, gradient descent can cycle and diverge. Using an extrapolation steps adresses this issue and converges to a saddle point (Nash equilibrium).

Spent yrs on this! Solution: 'adaptive prespecification'. Prespecify candidate adjustment variables & then data-adaptively select (using CV) ones that maximize precision. Will default to unadjusted if none improve precision.
