Yes, the protests and the police response will exacerbate the pandemic. But cases may have already been rising. Arizona, North Carolina, and California are seeing more cases than ever. The US is now trying to do harm reduction around Covid, not beat it:https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/06/america-giving-up-on-pandemic/612796/ …

I’m getting two good questions about the rise in cases in Arizona, North Carolina, and other states: - Is it just because we’re testing more? - Are we seeing hospitalizations rise too? Unfortunately, we have good evidence that the answers are no and yes, respectively.

Arizona, which is of special concern, is at its all-time peak in the data for tests, positives, and hospitalizations. For the first time since late April, the percent of tests that come back positive in AZ now again exceeds 10%. https://public.tableau.com/profile/peter.james.walker#!/vizhome/COVID-19SeeYourState/YourStateKeys …pic.twitter.com/aAXxeE2aZj

“The increased testing alone doesn’t seem to be a plausible explanation of why so many more cases were identified,” Joe Gerald, a UArizona professor of public health, told @pattymachStar and @DevoidAlex. “Finding a positive case is just now easier to do.”https://tucson.com/news/local/arizona-hospitals-bracing-for-crisis-as-covid-19-cases-surge/article_2534c829-32a1-5843-8005-d1c82bda5d40.html …

North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Arkansas are also seeing rising numbers of cases and hospitalizations.https://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking/status/1269035091084193792 …

Arizona cases and hospitalizations continue to move upward. The positive test rate is also increasing. The same is true in South Carolina, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Kentucky. pic.twitter.com/7PcHgg1gvW

Meanwhile, the number of tests per positive—a smart metric proposed by @twang0518, in which a “good” result is high—is now *falling* in the South, Southwest, and West. It rose through May. We’re testing more, yes, but it’s easier to find a positive case now than it used to be.pic.twitter.com/e7ctqeBs80

Apologies for doing this tweetstorm twice—the first tweet in the series said the opposite of what I meant, so I had to go back and redo them all.🤦

Seems pretty clear that right wing states not wearing masks to own libs are suffering tremendously. It’s ludicrous people are dying over a one time $5 charge but here we are Masks masks masks. @Noahpinion

why not make it positives per test so it’s flipped?

The idea is to focus on testing instead of the virus. More colloquial, but opposite std convention: “how well are we outtesting the virus?” https://twitter.com/ct_bergstrom/status/1259317966396514304?s=21 …https://twitter.com/CT_Bergstrom/status/1259317966396514304 …

Instead of graphing percent of tests positive, this twist from @twang0518 strikes me as an improvement: plot the average number of tests to find one positive. Analogous to Number Needed to Treat (NNT) in epidemiology, this makes changes more visible when positive rate is low. https://twitter.com/PeterJ_Walker/status/1259259274284249089 …
