Why does it feel that the survivorship-selected inside-joking Twitter microcelebs you follow (that would be me) secretly despise reply guys? If you're a small account you may not realize how much worse (on average and in quantity) the replies to big accounts are.

Big accounts (esp. bluechecks) are the target of status beefs. People on Twitter who look to gain status in a group or curry favor with someone don't leave supportive replies on their senpai's TL, but spam hateful replies on their senpai's enemy's TL.

The reason this happens, of course, is that small accounts interact mostly with people who want to have conversations with them, while large accounts interact mostly with people who want to denounce them for status points

Let's suppose a model of concentric circles of people around you: 10 friends know you well and trust your intentions 100 acquaintances understand you 1,000 ingroupers speak your language 10,000 adjacents share a lot of your culture etc.

When 10 people read your tweet, they're mostly friends. When 100,000 people read your tweet (I hit that number often at just 8k followers), *most* of them are very far from the ingroup and share zero context with me. So *most* of my replies are going to be from those people.

At first it's people not getting the joke. Then they're missing the point of the tweet. Then they think you're outgroup for gently correcting an ingroup take. This week someone read my thread on Jesus and BTC and for real assumed I'm a devout Christian who talks in Bible quotes.

If you're replying to a big non-mutual account, especially to a post that's doing numbers, keep that in mind. The OP is swamped with notifications, and it's very hard for them to tell the people who are trying to be funny or edgy from the torrent of idiots and haters.
