Things I'm tempted to block people for as I get ever further from the perfect number of followers (3000). A thread that I'm afraid will be ongoing:

Block people who reply to a Twitter poll with something that boils down to "your poll results are worthless because you're only surveying people who are on Twitter".

Block people who QT a subtweet with a snitch-tag of the presumed target, especially if that target is a large account with a propensity for beefs and bellicose followers.

Block people who reply with an attack or criticism and then QT when you don't engage with them. I saw it the first time, asshole.

Block people who reply or QT with a comment like "hope you don't get cancelled for this!" or "this will piss off some people!" This is just bringing trouble down on the OP while pretending to be friendly and concerned.

"Acknowledging" the Overton Window helps enforce the Overton Window. Loudly publicly helpfully warning somebody that their work is "cringe" is cringe enforcement. Journalists reporting "gaffes" create gaffes. Very important post by @robbensinger. lesswrong.com/posts/Js34Ez9n

Gentle reminder: we need to talk about how some of you haven't been blocked enough for claiming you can't believe you have to shout your unpopular opinion from the rooftops and it shows, but y'all ain't ready for that conversation. This isn't a good look.

Even if you spelled out several explicit rules for blocking, block some people who broke none of the rules based on vibe to prevent your legibility from being exploited by assholes who go right up to the boundary to see what they can get away with.

Block people who smugly nitpick some minor thing that has little bearing on the main argument you're making, especially if ten other people made the same nitpick in the replies before them. They're often not malicious, but still:

The dumb replies hurt more than the mean replies. Someone out to call you names wasn't going to be dissuaded either way. It slides off like rain. But the well-meaning person who failed at reading comprehension or elementary logic is like stepping on a nail, a jagged distortion.

Block people who mention Aella's sex work, Noah/MattY's weight, Nate Silver's hairline, Liz Bruenig's appearance etc. whenever they tweet about something unrelated. It's crazy how people develop a derangement syndrome around regular people who just happen to have 100k followers.

Block people who smugly reply "it's a lot more complicated than this" to a thread of you explaining something and don't elaborate

As my account grows I'm much quicker to block BUT if you get a friend to DM me for explanation or to unblock you I will almost always oblige. I want my blocks to be a win-win, not punishment, eg if someone stumbles onto my thread out of context and it's just getting them angry.

Block low-context buzzkill interlocutors they mean well but they're sucking the joy out of your writing and get nothing out of it either

The best solution I've come up with is to write for a small high-context audience, but even that doesn't protect you from low-context buzzkill interlocutors, unfortunately.

Block anyone who replies "as a rationalist, it's disappointing that Jacob wasn't rational enough to get this right" or the equivalent, this is by far the most infuriating way to disagree with someone and I get it all the fucking time

Replying to @yashkaf and @SilverVVulpes
Not a good take for a rationalist, on a population level your male population being mostly made up of killers helps.

Block people who assume that if they don't get a joke it's because you meant something maximally evil. Why are you even following me if that's where you're at, bro?

I can’t see the irony or subversion here so I guess this is just ‘boo fat people’ content?

me: X takes work but it's really worth it for me them: well I can't make the effort because I'm [tired/an Aries/neurodivergent/cactus parent] did you think about that? me: here let me save you the effort of reading any of my tweets ever again to help you conserve your strength

Block people who reply "why do you even care about XYZ lol" If it's "why are you so obsessed with XYZ" block all their friends and relatives just in case
