The movie Parasite is such an insane work of genius that it will take me weeks to gather my thoughts about it, and by then it will be too late for you to catch it in the cinema. Don't bother with trailers, trust the 99% Rotten Tomatoes rating and just go watch it.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Would also appreciate a link to any reviews/summaries you think are worthwhile. I was underwhelmed by the film, but everyone I know *loved* it, so I must be missing a lot!

First, and this is going to sound strange, Parasite is perfectly poised between order and chaos. Most movies are too formulaic and predictable (the MCU children's movies), some are too chaotic and incomprehensible (the worst of Lynch).

Parasite is at the edge of predictability at every scale: the next line, the next scene, the movie as a whole. You never fully know what's coming, but when it comes you see how it actually all makes sense. It's an intellectual thriller, like a puzzle at the limit of your skill.

Second, I'm a fan of absurd humor and Parasite delivers a peak experience, mostly through visuals alone. The dialogue was also so sharp and precise I really felt the pain of having to read subtitles, which usually doesn't bother me.pic.twitter.com/zt6ovAgGlm

As for class relations, I love that Parasite avoids hammering too simplistic a message or metaphor (which you could say was the case with Snowpiercer). It's more about the "system" as whole and not about "rich bad poor good".

It sees Korean capitalism almost as a feudal system. The poor can make it either through total subjugation to their betters (basement man) or by being ruthless sociopaths. Smart poor kids (Ki-Woo) are sold a daydream of education and mobility to keep them docile.

The rich are only nice because they can afford to be, and they maintain their self-image by splashing money around. As soon as their status ("crossing the line") or family are threatened they are just as selfish as anyone else.

Even the movie's poster is a work of art. It's visually stunning, and you can stare at it for minutes and keep noticing new details and symmetries.pic.twitter.com/m2x4RtPFax
