A project I collaborated on just came out: we found lots of multimodal neurons in mouse V1, and found that these neurons can rapidly (within 15 trials!) enhance their response to auditory tones after paired audio-visual simulation.

Great opportunity for anyone looking for a computational neuroscience postdoc position. Tim’s group are working on some of the most important problems in neuroscience imo.

Take a moment to remember the names on the papers you read. Take an extra moment if those names are different than ones you’re used to.

(1/6) Lecturers and professional staff at most UK universities will be going on strike for 8 days commencing tomorrow. We are striking about a range of issues including pensions, pay, overwork, and pay equity. UK academia can’t go on like this.

NEW EPISODE! What are "brain organoids"? We explain how these cell blobs differ from normal neurons in a dish and discuss their potential to advance medicine & the study of development. But just how brain-like are they? And do they pose an ethical issue?

NEW EPISODE! We talk about how we can use evolution to understand the brain & behavior. How has the nervous system evolved? What functions were most important? And how can this info make neuroscientists rethink the questions they ask about the brain?

NEW EPISODE! We talk about the (ideally) synergistic relationship between deep learning & neuroscience! How has the infiltration of deep nets reframed old questions in neuroscience? What tools can be used to understand both? What has been learned already?

New preprint with , "Learning as the Unsupervised Alignment of Conceptual Systems". Because items similar in one system (images) are also in other systems (text, audio), supervised tasks can be solved by unsupervised learning.
