The people of Italy voted against technocrats implementing austerity for the many and socialism for the very, very few. Now they have an IMF apparatchik as PM with a plan to implement more of the same. Could Italy's President have given the xenophobic populists a greater gift?

sure, not lecturing you (again, a big fan!). I'm just saying that Salvin,i a puntin-orban-farage-lover, as Interior Minister would have been a great danger for us. After that, every elections is a mistery, they could win, i know, but in the end you never know...

It's OK, let's just keep voting until we get a result that is fully Berlin-approved. Until then the President can veto every attempt at making a government. (disclaimer: Not a Lega/M5s voter)

What would have been the alternative? Should Mattarella have allowed the coalition to take Italy out of the Euro?

Mattarella facilitated the formation of the gvt from the beginning and waited for 82 days! He asked for changing 1 (out of 20) Ministers, one of his constitutional powers, due to ambiguity on his/their real intentions regarding Italy remaining in the eurozone.
