Y2K Aesthetic Institute 💽’s Tweets

Shoutout to this wonderful video by Aesthety on Y2K -- it's the most exhaustive & comprehensive I've seen; delving into the origins, rise & fall, and how the style was expressed across different mediums & design fields. + points for the perfect styling!

It's strange feeling nostalgic for this extremely corporate style, b/c at the time it was just the 'background noise' of life. It may have to do with how bright and optimistic it looks; eg. image 3 & 4 have a proto-Frutiger Aero look, a style that recently blew up again.

Found this absolutely incredible book with thousands of fonts & logotypes from the 1980s; always love discovering works that clearly influenced the later Y2K style! Logotypes of the World - Yasaburo Kuwayama (1987) I'll include a link to the full set of scans below!

Fashion feature from a European magazine called 'Yoof'; has that Jet Set Radio exaggerated angle futurism, but a few years prior. Also neat to see the web-browser styling (1/2) Yoof Magazine - Vol. 34 - Summer 1996 By Rony Platenkamp & Roland Arnassalon of M A Deymann

Found this commercial for 'Microsoft TV/Enhanced TV', produced by in 2000 (maybe)? Haven't seen it anywhere else online though. Got it off of a CD that came with the book 'Flips 5', back in that brief period when design books came with CDs

Lastly, the most prevalent style in the book is Gen-X Soft Club; seems like the default 'hip & cool' style for these typologies back then. Maybe sim. to how 'Airspace' is now? 1. UMG by SEHW (02) 2. Virgin Atlantic SFO by 8 Inc. (01) 3&4. Holmes Place Lifestyle Club by SEHW (03)

Last note for tonight: this image from a different Snog location reminded me of a motif we've been calling 'vectorbloom'; after noticing how prominent 'nature-inspired vector graphics' were in the 2000s. Usually maximalist, in keeping with the general atmosphere of the era.
