Would you be willing to have a read of the draft tutorial for drawing, specifically the section on power pencil (tapered shapes etc) and see if it's telling users the right things? https://inkscape.org/gallery/item/21828/tutorial-drawing_K2uvZQN.svg …
It's a great tutorial. Not finding the proper tools right away is all on me. I jumped into the program without any preparation.
The fact that I found all I need just by using Inkscape is maybe the biggest compliment I can give to a program
