Between good faith actors trying to arrive at the truth, quibbling over terminology is dumb - all you need to do is clarify what the other party means by a given term. In public discourse, it is absolutely necessary, because certain terms are so emotionally loaded.

Hmm, the problem is that people change their definitions over the course of an argument. While I agree that the actual word doesn't matter, consistency in its use does.

Again, between good faith parties, you stop to clarify terms. Between culture war tribal enemies, idk, call them a Nazi or a pedophile or something.

I think It's not only a failure of bad acting unfortunately. Earnest metaphysical conversations frequently get derailed the same way.

I think part of it is that people are engaging in cognitive compression, or don't realize they are using a term in an overbroad/imprecise way.

How to conversation: p1: state perspective p2: repeat back what they heard—in own words, AND to the satisfaction of p1 p2: state perspective p1: repeat back what they heard—in own words, AND to the satisfaction of p2 Etc. builds shared narrative = stay on same page

People are shifty and weird and inconsistent. Often time we don’t notice this in ourselves, and go on lockdown mode if we feel someone is trying to prove us wrong. In order to point out inconsistencies in someone else’s words, you can’t be arguing Needs vulnerability+low stakes

Sean you're very good at communicating and info exchange. Its a strong skill of yours. You like to learn from others and try to understand what they are saying, how they mean it. But you are also good at saying what you mean or restating yourself without ego. 10/10 good buddy.

Vulnerability is practically elevated to the level of an epistemic skill, now that I think about it.
