Thinking about this reality makes me sad and angry. I don't know, man. Maybe I should just pack my bags and move to some town invigorated by the Belt and Road project.

Lemme think. It all depends on what you want: whether you want to build something of your own or are happy to participate in other people's projects, and whether you are geared to making meaning or making money.

Prefer meaning making to money making. I'd like to build something of my own but happy to participate in someone elses, given it provides a degree of inclusion/meaning.

Acquire a skill if you don't already have one. In most places unskilled labour is already cheap + plentiful. If you don't have a skill in humanitarian work, you will have a harder time avoiding dead end voluntourist projects.

Some areas: 1. teaching. 2. medicine/nursing 3. construction/engineering 4. military (if you want to do something really crazy like fight ISIS or poachers or something).
