Religious studies 101 trains people to think "all Xists believe X" and treat faith traditions as neat, legible things with clear doctrinal boundaries. The reality on the ground is much messier.

Fundamentalism also shares this desire. It is like the authoritarian high modernism of theology, seeking to erase an accumulation of thought, rites and beliefs that can't be rigorously traced back to an original founder/text (which themselves are shielded from investigation).
