There are clearly hierarchical Buddhist traditions, and there are Christians who schism and go off to do their own thing all the time. Both religions have literally thousands of sects, ranging from the "do your own thing" all the way to the rigidly hierarchical.

You are right in one sense, I don't know of anything in Buddhism's history that compares to the violence of Catholicism's attempts to maintain a spiritual monopoly on Europe.
