The worrying thing about psychedelic drug culture is people within it (like in the stoner world) are reticent to admit negative experiences with the substances without claiming personal responsibility for them-- "I was in a bad place" or "The best experiences are worth the worst"

Even Terrence McKenna had a bad enough trip to put him off the stuff for the rest of his life-- but this is not widely known about him. He continued to promote the "culture" even after his whole "once you get the message, hang up the phone" bit of advice to himself.

I try to have a nuanced view on this issue because I don't think psychs are the worst thing you could do to yourself, I just think it's not for most people-- especially not extremely impressionable people looking for "direction in life"

People in this culture talk about "shamanism" etc-- but never mention that shamanism was a rigorously secretive & selective tradition which did NOT advertise its methods to the tribe at large.

I also have suspicions about the viability of reviving a shamanic tradition ex nihilo.
