"Emptiness" and "no self" seem like they have frighteningly nihilist implications. And that Western converts have embraced Buddhism to give a moral and religious gloss to atheist nihilism.
There are strands of Buddhism that seem to suggest a more positive transcendent reality or a more coherent and lasting idea of self (Tathagatagarbha). They don't seem to be consistent with the Pali canon (what I know of it) or those aspects of it emphasized by western converts.
