There are strands of Buddhism that seem to suggest a more positive transcendent reality or a more coherent and lasting idea of self (Tathagatagarbha). They don't seem to be consistent with the Pali canon (what I know of it) or those aspects of it emphasized by western converts.

There is definitely some kind of opposing metaphysics here that can produce discord. I'd love to see more discussion of this.

One thing I am made aware of is that when observing 'buddhists' and 'x-ians' the skillful and the sanctified within the religion somehow look the same in their actions, their grace, and their attendant flourishing. Some kind of meeting at the antipodes.
