thorns spikes and rubble? I think that is less to the point than skulls. any properly mopey teenager could have done a better job on this.

Skulls just communicate "something bad happened here, many people died" You need to communicate "do not dig half a mile straight down here" If you just make some metal stuff, people will set up a gift shop and make it a tourist spot (which would maybe prevent them from digging)

Ok, fair enough, but don't you think the order of priorities of communication is skewed? Why would the first priority be to communicate "something man made is here" and then "something man made AND dangerous is here"? Danger is easier, more primordial, and more important.
