It can be. (Epistemic status: very shaky) most of the horror stories I've heard were from people who went very hard, like an hour+ a day. But there have been some pretty severe psychiatric reactions from meditation.

yeah I read about some girl who killed herself after going on a 10 day retreat and such. I think you're probably right that it makes sense to not so extreme length meditation. and I probably need to start with smaller lengths bc 15 mins in and I'm fighting off puking

I've heard of a few post-Vipassana melt downs. Lots of glowing praises, too. Not everyone is built for or needs an extremely intense contemplative practice.
