Spirituality is the unionization of consciousness It's the process and practice by which we recognize our commonality with all other loci of conscious awareness and organize together in the war against replicators/natural selection

Is that something you can share with a stranger?

That's the whole point of it You *most* need this with strangers You don't need powerful social mechanisms to prevent arms races between you and your brother or close friend; you need to prevent them between strangers from opposite sides of the world

This is a very strange definition of spirituality, and one that has never existed. Are you sure you're not talking about "morality", e.g. as in Joshua Greene's "Moral Tribes" where morality is a way to coordinate and resolve disagreements with groups that don't share your norms?

no i think he's right. giving costly signals of believing in the same religion allows strangers to coordinate

But it's not just signals, that'd be the materialistic interpretation The reason why I'm talking about spirituality and not morality, why I'm talking about "unionizing consciousness", is that you *actually* have to discover that you and the stranger *actually* literally are One

Spirituality has a *purpose* The purpose is not, "ooh, being One with all consciousness feels really dope and gives my life meaning" The purpose is that then you, the One Consciousness, can coordinate across the many skulls you reside in, to wage war against the Replicators

Pure replicators - are these not Moloch?

Very related; I'll think more about the relationship between the two concepts

I didn't read the whole article but I found the replicator concept made almost immediate sense to me. Replicators - life shaped only by pure Darwinian imperative, nothing higher, does whatever it has to to win.

If Moloch says to eat our babies, by Moloch, we eat them, and woe unto our squeamish neighbours who were not strong enough to do what survival demanded. They are no more.

The point of the essay is to make it clear how important it is to prevent the existence of circumstances where it is adaptive to eat babies
