This was my experience with judo and martial arts. I remember arriving early to class one day with my instructor and shooting hoops for half an hour without a single basket. Senior student walked in and did it first shot. Sensei was a stubborn bastard who loved judo.
Tragedy of my instructor was that judo was the love of his life and he either discovered it too late/lacked the natural talent to be top tier judo athlete. What your quote reminded me of.
