For me http://meaningness.com helped me quite a bit. Strongly influenced my ideas on meaning and purpose

i like meaningness a lot but it's a hard read if you aren't ready for it and it doesn't exactly *answer* the question "what do i do with my life"

we apologize for the inconvenience :( Btw there’s some new stuff on purpose up on the site which I haven’t publicized because it’s from the 2007 draft, but maybe better than nothing. Explaining the complete stance for purpose is high on my priority list atm fwiw

I’m bewildered by all these claims that materialism doesn’t work. It seems to work fine?

Bizarrely, some people seem to think *I’m* an altruist with a “mission” because I do literally any things helpful to others, ever. Dude, if you want to get paid, enjoy the work, and have any positive relationships, you have to be helpful *sometimes*.

So, you recognize (as everyone does at some level) that both personal enjoyment and usefulness to others are valid purposes. So long as you maintain that, you are not succumbing to “mission” or “materialism” as I’ve used the words.

There is a failure mode of trying to combine mundane and higher purposes in a way that doesn’t work well, explained here. [Unpublicized new content! But slightly drafty.] https://meaningness.com/mingled-mission-materialism …

1. Sounds like "integrating the shadow" - acknowledging, making peace with and ultimately making use of your ignoble motives.

2. Legible but ineffective performative virtue (like fair trade coffee) is not always about the external effect, but may represent an earnest desire to *become* someone who cares about things beyond themselves.
