Most of the anti-school stuff I see on here seems to be based on the assumption that families and communities are going to step in and fill in the gaps for fundamental things we take for granted, like literacy. They will, for middle class kids.

that's fair, though i strongly doubt forcing it into a schedule based on age group is better than letting them learn it at their own pace and according to their own interests with some guidance

I suspect that's mostly a scalability issue, which is going to come up whenever you rely on the government for financing. I can think of other arguments, but they seem kind of weak to me now (might change mind later, idk). Classic authoritarian high modernism.

I really wonder what percentage of kids learn to read at school But I'm in favor of something like a standard exam (eg. reading) that you should pass by a certain age + free resources available should you need them (eg. online video lessons, tutoring, co-study with other kids)
