How do we reconcile the spiritual kind of "good" that emerges from struggle and hardship with the utilitarian good that comes from building security and prosperity for our descendants? Is such a reconciliation even possible?

For example, a lot of people can still hold down a job, save money and raise a family while still falling prey to the softness of modern life.

Not very many people are at the frontiers of some meaningful struggle against evil and suffering; in fact, a huge part of the culture wars seems to be creating a bullshit theatre where people can pretend they are doing exactly that.

Does it not seem like modern society is trying to short circuit this process, seemingly by giving us more comfort and removing sources of struggle and adversity?

I have lived in a time of unprecedented peace and security, and yet I see more and more people scrabbling for a reason to live.

If the weirdo throwback religious fundamentalists we all scorned can be right about something so fundamental, maybe God is not quite as dead as we thought.

If God is dead, how is it that we are so obviously living in a world governed by Satan?

Oh I've changed my mind about God being dead, but I do think faith is the glue that held it all together
