Sure would be nice to live in a world where 'genocidal subjugation of outgroup is good actually' is a marginal loser opinion instead of an increasingly mainstream one i guess, lmk when there's directions to one and i'll move there

"Genocidal subjugation of the outgroup" is always popular, which is one of the reasons why we are very careful about declaring which groups and individuals are inherently threatening by their simple being.

And yes, we err on the side of tolerating some very nasty people because the floor has to be somewhere and we err on the side of toleration. Because once Nazis are deprived of rights, I am pretty sure the pearl clutchers of the world look for the next least popular group.

There is, I should point out, _quite a wide gap_ between 'Nazis don't have rights' and 'It is uncultured/unkind to loudly oppose or shun Nazis'. I hope you aren't motte-and-baileying between those.

No, I am fine with non-violent social consequences for Nazis.

But I would still consider that within the ambit of toleration.

But when you say the "peace treaty" does not apply - that sounds like war footing. It sounds like someone to whom ordinary, fundamental moral considerations do not apply. So I am suspicious that it is you who are motte and bailying between "violently suppress" and "shun"

A reasonable suspicion induced by the choice of terminology in the article, and one of its weaknesses. No, I do not support preemptive uses of force. And I don't equate speech with a use of force, as I've seen others do.

This article is talking about a "peace treaty" that prevents us from being "at each others' throats." It's clearly about violence, not about imposing social costs/shunning.

that language seemed pretty unambiguously metaphorical (I mean, "we're targeting this guy in our election campaign" is unambiguously not about literally drawing a bead on him with a weaopn), but see @browserdotsys' addenda elsewhere in thread

um, idk if you are aware, but queer folks tend to have higher experiences of violence *and* be socialized against effective self-defense, so. It does not seem particularly Bad to depict effective self-defense?

The point isn't whether it's bad, the point is whether the article is about violence or non-violent social consequences.
