Am I supposed to be more ambitious? Am I supposed to believe in causes?

Unless you are tired of being unambitious / not caring for causes, why stop? If that part is working for you.

i'm tired of being unenthusiastic. i'm tired of feeling jaded and defeated to the point of being discouraged from trying. but i know what people are like and i know how this world works so i think my orientation is functional as well as realistic.

This jadedness saves you from investing time in a lot of things that are dead ends but offer the superficial appearance of meaningful activity.

Something will come along. But you have to pay attention to your inner life and not be seduced by a cargo cult version of productive activity. I have discovered that when I am not enthusiastic about something I "should" be there is a reason.

The questions I wished I asked myself more were "how can I remain agile and flexible to respond to opportunities to make meaning" and "what skills will port across a wide variety of domains."
