The real reason Darth Vader's backstory shouldn't have been explained was that for good Anakin to switch over, the dark side must have said some things that actually made sense.

What would it look like? Hobbesian utilitarianism? Machiavellianism? Tantra? It would have had to have had a full on critique of the Jedi.

THE ONLY WAY to keep Star War's dualistic moral cosmogony preserved (and not totally lame) is to leave these questions unexplored. The Empire are genocidal planet destroyers. You don't need to know why.

But imagine Vader making a serious of decisions that all seemed like the right thing to do at the time in his dark side worldview, right up to destroying Alderaan. And then it takes the Emperor frying Luke for him to be like "oh shit, I fucked up."

This makes sense, actually. Seeing his son pleading for his life got him on a subrational, emotional level that no amount of moralistic "maybe genocide is bad" finger wagging could do.
