Perhaps we should drop the Marx-ish fascination with treating "capitalism" as a thing, at all. There is no "capitalism." There are simply societies which prioritize private legal claims to varying degrees.
Capitalism is not a thing, but capital definitely is and thinking of it as an alien intelligence reaching backwards in time to assemble itself seems to be a pretty useful metaphor.
Or, alternatively, that metaphor is already the hobgoblin of half of the population's mind, thanks to a Marx-ish education.
I am not a big fan of Marx, but I do see the world being remade by something which is independent of human values. If you want to convince me I'm wrong, just pointing and saying "Marx!" is not the way to do it.
That's not what I'm doing. If you want to describe the tendency of modern democracies to tear down traditional values and remake the world in their image, why do you need the term "capitalism" to do it? The baggage the word carries leads to imprecise speech.
Because capitalism is closer to the mark than "modern democracy."
I agree that it has a lot of baggage - like its association with the great communist tyrannies of the 20th century. One of the reasons I prefer "capital" to capitalism. But I haven't found a better one.
