People proselytize about the benefits of meditation and psychedelics with no real way of dealing with it when things go south. I don't just mean "an unpleasant experience that is recovered from" I mean protracted malaise and mental illness.

I've heard about people getting stuck in the "dark night" through meditation. Can you shed any light on this?

Offhand, I know that it is taken from Christian mysticism. Christian saints have described periods of spiritual aridity, sometimes lasting decades. But it's been taking up by the mindfulness/hardcore dharma crowd. I don't know if it means exactly the same thing.

It seems to refer to a prolonged period of depersonalization that is felt as frankly terrifying and unpleasant. Epistemic status: all of this is off the cuff, I haven't done any reading on it for years, and most of that was casual internet browsing.

There is a lot of talk about the way out being through, leaning into it, crisis as spiritual opportunity, etc.

Which is fine, from people who have experienced and are able to guide others through it. That doesn't really seem to be the case though. Which is one of the problems when you import spiritual technology while severing the lineage.
