If everyone around you thinks you're wrong, it is reasonable to self doubt. This can be done implicitly ("this sounds crazy") as well as explicitly ("people tell me my viewpoint on this is fringe minority")

Maybe not. But how many times have people said "you're wrong" and you've double checked and been wrong? Knowing when to be correctly contrarian is a difficult, meta-level skill to cultivate, because other people's assessments of the world are relevant for cultivating our own.

Maybe the problem is that our system of social incentives is broken. A risk adverse system would not make people pay a high social cost for being wrong about something which, if true, would be very serious (low risk for false positives).
