Hm, yeah – some assumptions on my end: - "Meditation" is not Buddhism, by a long shot - "Buddhism" is not 'materialist Americans practicing some portion of Buddhism on their own' When I say "Buddhism," I mean: rigorously studying under a master. Anything else is not Buddhism.
"detachment" only makes sense within a normative framework that describes things you should and should not be detached from. If you destroy that framework by applying it too broadly - seems kinda monstrous.

I seem to see this – what I consider misunderstanding – pretty frequently. I suspect it's not going to be easy to correct in the public mind. In-practice Buddhism doesn't have this feeling, even the renunciatory kind, and I'm not sure where it comes from yet.

If I had to guess, you can misinterpret some of the scripture to – which is already often mistranslated – to justify detaching from the world in order to satisfy a need to take refuge.
