Put simply, the answer that western Buddhist converts give that seems to be rooted in the Pali canon is unappealing to me. I am open to the possibility that a) they are wrong and b) there other, 'better' visions under the umbrella of Buddhism.

Or I suppose that I have misinterpreted them, but, in fairness, if that's the case they probably haven't been making their point very well.

In the tradition I'm most familiar with, the question is: "how can I give my life to great love." I'm not familiar with what 'Western Buddhist converts pull from the Pali canon' – what do you have in mind?
