I feel like most of the pali-canon modeled contemporary discourse about enlightenment is... wrong? Normatively and/or descriptively.

Haven't read it directly - which memes in particular? Sounds interesting.

Emptiness, no-self, the end of desire, the skandhas... that sort of thing. It always sounds disassociative and horrifying to me.

Gotcha. I think there's major value in or nearby that set of ideas, and defenders will really go to lengths to show how it's not exactly what it sounds like. I think the destruction of one's illusions often *feels* like one's actual self is being destroyed, so I'm into this part.

That said I basically agree that there's some big problem in the area. Don't yet think I have named it clearly - very very hard thing to do.

I have found Jung's "integration" or Maslow's "self actualization" to be better representations of actual, desired end-points than "enlightenment."

Or "salvation" or "saintliness" for that matter.
