I see people who've never had 'thick community' and it's like they're grasping at something they don't even have a frame of reference for. Or being perpetually disappointed by cargo cult versions of it.

The other big one is the disenchantment of the world by naturalist science, about which volumes have been written by smarter ppl than me.

I spent my early childhood in a small town where my mom had lots of mom friends - people who were always stopping by for coffee or whom we were always visiting (often unannounced) for coffee.

Then I spent my 20s in a pre-digital subculture - anarcho-punk - and literally all we did was hang out and engage in meaning-making banter (going to demos and actions, gossiping about radical politics).
