I grew up in what was a progressive household for the 80s-90s, raised by my mother - so gender was always the same as biological sex, not any appearance or role. This is why I have a hard time with the idea that people change it by changing their roles, name, or appearance.

I guess as a follow up - I never had a strong "normative" dimension of gender instilled into me as a child. It was always descriptive, so the idea that people blur gender by deliberately playing with gender norms seems weird to me.
