the obvious answer for seeking power is "to bring the world more into conformity with my values" but to get to presidential levels you have to sacrifice those values to singleminded ladder climbing.

this may be insufficiently cynical, not all of these people *have* values

i suspect the real reason is to feel that one's existence has been validated by History

some certainly have that narcissistic grandiosity, but i think positioning yourself as the implementer of whatever the prevailing values are is a way to become the thing that power flows through, so you get a lot of it for yourself.

yeah but my point is power to do what? whatever it is your campaign team tells you will keep you electable? or am i just naive for thinking that power has to have a level of 'why' beyond it?

i think so, yes - power for its own sake. imagine a river of money, instead, that you could stand in and direct, while also holding your own bucket that you can fill, if you win an election. "yeah but money to do what?" is a less puzzling question... to do anything!

not sure i've understood yr point - money is fungible in a way that the power of the POTUS is not

i presented it as an easier-to-grok notion, those of us without real power probably have a hard time imagining how to use it. it's upstream from money, and those with it can always enrich themselves, legal restrictions on it aside. i mean, look at all those corrupt bastards.

i mean, as dysfunctional as it is, there are still better ways to pursue wealth in the U.S. than through public office.
