I finished the Mandalorian last night, and so listened to the Soundcast episode on the series this week. Now I have a big questionhttps://www.thesoundcast.com/2019/11/the-music-of-mandalorian-ch-1-2-ep-145.html …

The soundcast is devoted to critiquing score music. In the episode
@ccoleman is displeased with the music and perhaps with the show as a whole, on the ground she that it is too much of a stylistic departure from the Star Wars of days past.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -
He maintains that just as there is a common visual language that demonstrates to viewer support you are in the SW universe there should be a common musical language demonstrating the same thing.

I disagree with this. I am 100% ok with a Star Wars film/series whose tone—musically or thematically—is a big departure from the main “skywalker” films. It simply doesn’t bother me.

But as I thought about it I realized I *would not* feel this way about a potential Lord of the Rings series. A LoTR series that has departed too far thematically or musically from that established by Howard’s Shore wouldn’t grate to no end.

But why? Does anybody else we feel like I do? If so, any guesses for why it is ok to mess with Star Wars but messing with LoTR would feel like a sacrilege?

Another way of asking: why is Star Wars big enough for just about any story you want to tell, but Middle Earth is not?

IT IS NOT. ONLY the OT and Rogue One are canon, all else is HERESY and ABOMINATION. Haven't read Expanded Universe - willing to keep an open mind.
