it doesn't matter how good your arguments are for the psychological benefits of strict teleogies or closed communities are, if they can't overcome the material benefits that come from cosmopolitianism and unrestricted exploration of possibilty to find unknown advantages you lose

Figuring out how to get all of the real, life and death benefits of industrial capitalism at scale AND still living in a satisfying and flourishing human community us one of the big problems of our time imo.

I think that religious subcultures that are willing to make arbitrary refusals of new technologies have the best of both. (orthodox jews, old order anabaptists, etc)
