Tuesday Technical Tweet Thread Time! Let's go on the roller coaster of what happens at a low level when a DNS server sends an 4,000 byte EDNS0 response to a client whose MTU is 1200 bytes. Confused already? don't worry, we'll break it down. I promise it's super interesting.

I found it interesting to play this twice: first writing down my initial "gut" guess, and then trying to carefully work out the answer based on hardware speeds (memory BW, latency, etc). Great reminder of what computers are good and bad at, and some real surprises. Try it!

Code review improves code readability and code quality, but the real value is that it teaches humility, collaboration, and how to change your mind. Usually criticism of it is rooted in insecurity around those three things.

Sometimes I wonder if the only reason for the growing popularity of developer is that it's the ONLY way for devs to get an office with a door so they can concentrate.

The $10m engineering problem This is plain awesome work from using a wide variety of techniques used to curb infra spend: - rearchitecting systems - "tree shaking" to distribute optimal JS bundles - optimizing Go code - Consul in lieu of ALB

So, programmers, you know those systems that have been maintained for TOO LONG? that are just too expensive (in terms of technical debt) to replace, that are just hacks on hacks on hacks at this point, are a never ending maintenance nightmare that can't be killed?

In life, you need forcing functions. You never know what you're capable of until you have no choice but go and do it. Excessive comfort leads to unrealized potential.
