This is Sioned Jones. This Bantry resident is up in court for causing damage to a sitka spruce plantation near her house. Over the last 14 years, she has quietly replaced the conifers with native broad leaf trees.pic.twitter.com/jbhhFFnols

The clearfell method of harvesting leaves in its wake an apocalyptic-like scene, and any life that manages to grow subsequently gets contaminated by herbicide and pesticide used to establish new plantations. Meanwhile the acidic pine needles affect the pH of soil & waterways.pic.twitter.com/L5hnJpf7p8
In West Cork one woman has been working quietly away on her own rewilding project, creating a vastly improved landscape of native woodland over a period of 14 years. Sioned's re-wilding project is now a young established woodland, teeming with biodiversity and life.pic.twitter.com/ubUMYuKcvk
Sioned is being charged with criminal damage, a charge she denies on the basis that she prevented a more serious crime of ecocide taking place. Extinction Rebellion West Cork stands in solidarity with Sioned: we think this woman is an environmental hero!pic.twitter.com/Umr0J5VsIY

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/8144089_Carbon_sequestration_in_the_trees_products_and_soils_of_forest_plantations_An_analysis_using_UK_examples … Conifers sequester the most carbon the fastest, but hey, if 418ppm doesn't bother you, go ahead, cut down the trees and watch to see how fast a developer bribes a FF councillor to zone the site for a hotel because nobody will be making money from the land
now i've read the paper, its entirely based on modelling. with no measures taken! whether the estimates made nearly 30 years ago still hold now that our climate is changing, our understanding of soils has improved, I sincerely doubt. Come back to me with more recent *evidence*
@jarrodmckenna 'Member when we walked through one of these and I was like, "Old growth forest" and you were like, "Actually, no. Opposite of that, goofus" ?
That’s exactly what you would say.
I said something less judgemental and just thought that.
