I'm all for collective ownership of journals but the funding plan can't be: publish a book review that's only read by other book reviewers and bored recipients of Artforum (who got BF for free). I love BF but I've never met a civilian who had even heard of the magazine.

This is really horrible news, and an awful decision. What a great publication has been. One of my ambitions as a callow freelance writer twenty years ago was to appear in its pages, and it was an honour to do so a few times.

Bookforum was the spirit of New York letters I didn't know I was hoping to find as both a reader and writer new to the city: Original, open to newcomers and new takes, the rare venue that didn't treat style and play as enemies of serious criticism. This is a terrible shame.

when I was young, Bookforum delivered the world of politics and culture that I couldn't access physically. introduced me to writers and critics like @JenLouiseWilson @NifMuhammad @CharoShane @laurenoyler among others. made me more curious and less dumb. as a magazine should
