I have since been working in an incredibly supportive and respectful lab that has shown me healthy environments DO exist.
At the same time, past experiences of disrespect leave such a sour taste, and impacts our interest in the field. 2/

I still love science. Despite what academia says, you can be passionate about science but NOT pursue research. I'm thinking about exploring
#scicomm after my PhD, and I am beyond excited to tackle science in a completely different way

The differences in attitudes of professionalism and accountability between most labs at university and the science industry is insane. Unfortunately some people who thrive in or foster a toxic culture will move up and make it harder for others.
-
Yes, especially when there's no system to stop toxic cultures. It's also a system that continues to elevate the privileged and oppress marginalized groups.

I read in my profession that you should look for supervisor who likes to work with you and see your strengths and weaknesses so the reasch work will be enjoyable.
-
Ideally yes but challenges include: - Supervisors who offer 'fake supportive' attitudes during recruitment - Early grad students being unfamiliar with what will work best for them - Stigma when leaving a lab environment - ... so much more

Its horrible for students on scholarship from poor countries, they think u came from the mud and u have no chioce, so they treat u with professional disdain and u just suffocate
-
So much for a PhD student. I might not go that length anyways
