Hey mentors - Before you scold a trainee for not meeting expectations, ask yourself:
- Were the expectations communicated clearly?
- Is there evidence that the trainee is NOT putting in effort?
- Are there additional factors (ex. health issues, etc.) in play?

In these situations, brainstorm methods to help the trainee build any lacking skills and/or alternative approaches that will account for external factors (ex. flexible schedule if strict hours are difficult on health) It is YOUR JOB as a mentor to facilitate trainee growth.
"Were the expectations communicated clearly?" seems a big shortcoming from mentors these days. Seems people are expected to already know them as some kind of unspoken/unwritten rules.

I told more than 3 PIs that I was having a personal harsh time and no support system in this new city. I took a week off. I passed my classes with average grades. I received multiple emails from PIs saying how disappointed they were on the for not aceing everything 
Sorry to hear that happened to you. Good job getting it done, and taking the time to work through some challenging personal stuff. I hope that things have gotten at least a little easier.
