I personally entered my PhD program immediately after graduating college. Looking back, I would have benefited from gap year(s) to gain more life experience and make a more informed decision about pursuing a PhD.

Everyone has a different life path. There is no right or wrong. What do you gain by shaming individuals who have a different life path than you?

I want to remind everyone that the grad student who made these comments is NOT representative of all students who enter their PhD straight from undergrad.

I've seen many comments that condemn younger students from starting their PhD. While I admit that gap year(s) could have been instructive for me, I do not regret starting my PhD immediately after undergrad. There are plenty of successful scientists who start grad school early.

Please do NOT turn this thread into ageism toward younger students. Let's not forget the core message of this thread: Everyone's life path is different. Let's stop condemning those whose paths differ from us.

I finished my PhD at 42 and got a tenure track job two yrs later without doing a postdoc. My kids are off to college so I don’t need to worry about having kids while I’m working towards tenure. No complaints here.
