Since corps use Slack/Hipchat that is less friction for (new-to-opensource) devs than IRC. I had more than one dev refuse to participate in @OpenStack because of IRC instead Slack! By using video, Google groups, etc. they already planted themselves firmly in the walled garden --

I would say anyone how refuses to work on something because of their tooling is being quite shortsighted. What was the reasoning? Other than IRC is hard, or I want gifs.
