So I think the nest folks are abit off the beaten path. My recommendation is to serve via ember-cli, so you both get errors and never serve stale artifacts. That being said, this workflow isn’t uncommon, when the ember app is embedded or retro fitted into an existing site

Yeah. Could we write the error page to disk in dev?

We can, but It wouldn’t fix the issue out of the box.

We still serve via ember serve, so I think that we are not that far off the beaten path. Correct me if I’m wrong?

Based on what @alexlafroscia mentioned, you are correct. Which presents a solution, which requires only public API usage.

Specifically, it sounds like the nest specific middleware, which @alexlafroscia mentioned, may be implemented incorrectly/inserted in the wrong part of the express middleware chain.

Without seeing the code, its tricky to know exactly. But in-general, if a custom middleware causing the `broccoli-watcher` middleware to be circumvented, will break at-least 2 things: * blocking requests mid-build (to avoid serving stale artifacts) * the build error page.

Given the description, the following express middleware ordering issue seems likely: 1. custom nest index.html middleware 2. broccoli-watcher 3. broccoli-serve-files Rather then: 1. broccoli-watcher 2. custom nest index.html middleware 3. broccoli-serve-files

This is also quite likely, as a public API to specify the recommended ordering has only been available since Jan 19, 2017 (ember-cli@v2.13-beta.1)https://github.com/ember-cli/ember-cli/pull/6633/commits/3c909dd546f371115527f826f52cdce05c8af8f3 …

Anyways, lets see if we can get this blank screen on build error issue resolved. I would love for you guys to benefit from @twokul's nicely re-styled build error pages: https://github.com/ember-cli/broccoli-middleware/pull/25 …pic.twitter.com/Ie1URo3LTl

FWIW, I would love to do the brunt of the work on this, but the blocker has been that I don’t know enough and need some initial major hand holding.

Your help is appreciated. I think @twokul has done a good first pass, landing a bunch of the plumbing and improving the baseline experience. Have you had a chance to re-evaluate since his work landed? If further insider knowledge is needed, maybe @twokul has cycles to guide?
