I don't see the point in calling most people "idiots" (in all caps)

I'm obviously being very cynical here, because I didn't realize until now how many people trust Facebook or CNN or Fox News to be their sole source of information. But I'm not going to pussyfoot around the willfully uninformed masses that want to keep it this way.

That's the fallacy of false equivalence, though. Just because Fox & CNN follow something of the same pattern doesn't mean they do it to the same degree, or that an equidistant point is by definition correct.

Certainly not, but you must agree anyone trusting only CNN or only Fox News is getting a skewed viewpoint based on a particular target demographic. Some will get pulled further left, some further right, unless they're actively trying to get all sides of a story.

Right, but that's nearly tautological for any given news source. The problem is twofold: people accept info that validates preexisting views uncritically, and news sources are often biased... but not to the same degree.

What I'm trying to get at is that you can't just say "everyone's biased!" and throw your hands in the air. Journalism still matters, truth can still be found. The WaPo does more unbiased journalism than HuffPost. CNN covers both sides more frequently than does Fox.

I never said "everyone's biased" or threw my hands into the air. The problem is that whether I personally try to help centrify my feed or not doesn't matter; Facebook algorithms are still going to feed people what they want to read.

This is too defeatist and simplistic. Vox cares about being more nuanced and is successful on social media. Facebook's algorithms aren't quite as magical at force-feeding people exactly what they already believe as you say.

The bottom line is that Facebook (and that's all I've been talking about here) is not a reliable source of news because friends are not a reliable source of news. Critical thinkers don't just consume what they're given. 24h news is similar, but not tailored to your friends+bias.

Facebook is not a source of news.

They have news available for consumption, they choose what is newsworthy (be it algorithmically or by curation), they selectively show certain news to certain users based on what is going to create the greatest engagement. It's not an RSS feed.
