I hope someone at @reddit is advocating to stop spamming mobile users with this ad every few clicks. If you are the dev/design/product person working this change through the bureaucracy, know you have the support of many mobile users. The product as is has been made unusable.pic.twitter.com/oy8SOwS4Pz

Can you imagine being the web developer that has to build a modal that said “what I make is inferior, you should go use an app instead”?

I can imagine being the manager that wants to juice the app install numbers and is patting themselves on the back. While the total number of engaged users on mobile plummets.

Last time Google investigated this on their own properties [1], the results were so bad they not only removed the interstitials from their own app, they penalized sites that use them[2] [1] https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2015/07/google-case-study-on-app-download-interstitials.html … [2] https://searchengineland.com/googles-app-interstitial-giant-ad-penalty-is-now-live-235000 …

They eventually expanded the ban in 2017 to all kinds of interstitials that block content.https://searchengineland.com/interstitialgeddon-google-warns-will-crack-intrusive-interstitials-next-january-257252 …

TLDR: with interstitials, they got 9% click through to mobile (including non follow throughs) and *69%* mobile abandonment. When they switched to a less obtrusrive banner, 1-day active mobile web users went up by *17%* and it didn't much affect native downloads.pic.twitter.com/orH9Neb8h0

This matches my experience. I just don't use reddit on my phone anymore.

I've worked somewhere where—as a mobile web dev—I was asked to implement such an interstitial page rather than given time to polish mobile web. This is the worst industry anti-pattern.
